A rental counter hands the org's property to a customer. A valet stand, a coat check, a repair shop, a dry cleaner and a boarding kennel do the exact opposite. Business Dash records which direction custody went, because it decides who pays when something goes wrong.
When a customer's own property is damaged in your care, that is your liability and not their invoice. Custody direction is recorded on the incident rather than guessed from context, and the charge path is closed outright for customer property — a system that could get this backwards would eventually get it backwards in front of somebody holding their car keys.
Those two produce completely different next actions at a valet stand, and a screen that only knows a charge was not raised cannot tell them apart. The direction is named out loud — the customer pays, the org pays, or nobody has decided — so the person at the desk knows which conversation they are having.
