When your card fails, your customers shouldn't lose your business in Google

Cards fail for legitimate reasons. Expiring digits. Fraud lock. Bank held the charge. The team's CFO is at lunch. Most platforms don't differentiate — your access flips off and your customer-facing site comes down with it.

Three things happen the moment the site goes down:

1. Your customers fail mid-flow. They click "Book" and get a broken page. They never see the team-can't-pay-the-bill subtext; they just see a company that doesn't work. 2. Google starts returning your URLs as 404. Each crawl marks the URL as missing. After enough crawls, the page drops from the index. Even after you pay and restore service, the ranking takes weeks to recover. 3. Your team's hands are tied trying to resolve the billing problem because their internal tools also went dark.

The third one is the one platforms usually miss: even the admin who's trying to update the card can't log in to see the invoice.

Three states, indexed by days since the lapse started:

• Day 0-14 — grace. Everything works. The Business Dash dashboard surfaces a "Past due — resolve by <date>" banner so your team knows. Customer-facing site is untouched. The admin can log in and update the card.
• Day 14-60 — lapsed. Interactive features (cart, checkout, scheduling bookings, chatbot conversations, form submissions) start returning a typed error so your team's UI can show "Payments pending — restore billing." But the static surface — your marketing pages, parallel-page URLs, blog, gallery, sitemap, robots — keeps serving. Your customer-facing site keeps working. Your SEO ranking is untouched.
• Day 60+ — suspended. Everything returns. But it returns carefully: robots.txt switches to Disallow: / (Google reads this as "temporary block, don't drop from index"), sitemap.xml returns an empty body, and individual pages return HTTP 503 (Google's "come back later" signal). Your URLs stay in the index. Your ranking holds. When you pay, the cache invalidates, robots flips back, and you're back online within minutes.

It would be cheaper to flip a switch and turn everything off. Most platforms do exactly that.

The Business Dash position is: the timing of your billing problem is mostly an issue between you and your bank. Your customers had nothing to do with it. Punishing them — and your search ranking — is a separate set of costs that compound for months after the original problem.

So the gate runs in the static-data layer (cached marketing reads keep serving), the SEO infrastructure is on the platform's side (we own the robots.txt and sitemap generation), and the suspension state itself is degraded carefully via HTTP 503 + Disallow rather than HTTP 404 + missing-sitemap.
