Today, this week, this pay period and this month — each against the target your manager set. Commission, overrides and bonuses only, because salary and hours are pay for being here rather than for selling.
"$18,400" answers nothing on its own. The question somebody opens their pay screen to ask is whether they are ahead, and by how much.
So targets are set per person and per period, and every figure is shown against the mark it has to clear. All four periods sit together rather than on separate screens, because a strong day inside a weak month is exactly the thing worth noticing and separate tiles hide it.
Raising somebody's target does not rewrite their past. A target is recorded with the range it applied over, so a number raised in March cannot retroactively turn January into a miss.
A waiter's covers, an in-house sales rep's installs, a technician's upsells and a canvasser's booked appointments are one measurement wearing four job titles.
It is stored once and labelled from the trade your organisation is in, so a restaurant reads "server" where a cable company reads "sales rep" — without either of them running a different system underneath.
Credit is also kept separate from assignment. A job worked by a crew can be credited to whoever sold it, and conflating those two would pay the wrong person.
